30% OF GHANAIAN WOMEN ENCOUNTER SEXUAL BASE VIOLENCE…CHRAJ

The Deputy Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Mercy Larbi, says Ghana has made a significant thrive in promoting human rights and fighting gender-based violence. However, we still face some challenges.

She said that according to the 2022 United Nations report, 1 out of 4 Ghanaian women has suffered sexual violence from an intimate partner.

Mercy Larbi then revealed that studies indicated that approximately, 30 percent of Ghanaian women encounter sexual-based violence at least once in their lifestyle, and she described the act as uncalled-for.

“We must intensify our efforts to create a society where everyone can live freely without fear or violence,” she noted.

She made this known when climaxing the 16 Stations, 16 Routes Social Drive, and Celebration of the International Human Rights Day held in Koforidua on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

The program was celebrated under the theme: ” Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”.

Dr. Doris Mawuse Agbloitse, the head of the Unit at the United Nations Population Fund, mentioned that once they have officially closed the ceremony, it doesn’t mean they can’t talk about the issues of Gender-Based violence or issues of harmful practices, and we have to continue the conversation in wherever we find ourselves.

She said they would continue the initiative until they achieved zero Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Ghana, and their dedication to ending GBV remains resolute, guided by the principles of empathy, equality, and justice.
