SCHOOL CHILDREN FORCED TO LEARN AT FUNERAL GROUNDS AS HEAVY RAIN DESTROY CLASSROOMS ROOF

In an unusual turn of events, students at Twifo Kenkuase Basic School have found themselves studying in a funeral ground after heavy rainfall ripped the roofing sheets off their classroom building. With no immediate repairs possible, teachers and students have been forced to relocate their lessons to a temporary shelter nearby — the only space available to accommodate them: a local funeral ground.
The disaster struck unexpectedly as a heavy storm swept through the area, damaging many structures and leaving Twifo Kenkuase Basic School severely impacted. The storm’s force was enough to peel away the classroom’s metal roofing, rendering it unsafe for classes. With classrooms flooded and no funds for urgent repairs, the school administration had no choice but to find an alternative location, however unconventional.
“This is not what we imagined for our children,” said Mrs. Adjoa Owusu, a concerned parent. “They deserve better learning conditions than this. We appeal to the government and well-meaning individuals to help restore their classrooms.”
Classes at the funeral grounds have proven challenging for both students and teachers. With minimal resources and no walls to shield them, students must cope with distractions, uncomfortable seating, and the constant reminder of the space’s usual purpose. Some students, visibly unsettled, expressed difficulty focusing in such an environment.
“We’re doing the best we can,” remarked Mr. Kwame Yeboah, a teacher at the school. “But it’s hard for the children. They are distracted, and it’s challenging to keep their spirits up in a place like this. Our greatest hope is for a quick response to get them back to a proper learning environment.”
The incident has spurred local leaders and parents to call for urgent action to repair the school. Community members have also come forward, donating materials to help with temporary repairs. However, without significant financial support, the school’s roof remains in need of complete replacement.
For now, the school’s students continue to attend lessons at the funeral ground, with educators doing their best under trying circumstances. The community remains hopeful that soon, with support from the government and well-wishers, Twifo Kenkuase Basic School will once again be a safe and dedicated space for learning.
