Ghana Champions Community-Based Ecotourism at 2025 KOPIST Forum in South Korea

Yeosu, South Korea – June 2025

Ghana made a powerful statement on the global stage at the 2025 Korea Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Tourism (KOPIST) Forum, held in the scenic coastal city of Yeosu, South Korea. Leading the delegation was the Honourable Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, who passionately presented Ghana’s pioneering efforts in Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET).

Under the theme “Fostering Regional Development through Ecotourism,” the forum brought together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders from across Asia, Africa, and beyond to share ideas, success stories, and innovations in sustainable tourism.

Taking center stage, Hon. Dzifa Gomashie delivered an inspiring keynote address that highlighted Ghana’s commitment to inclusive, environmentally conscious tourism that uplifts local communities. She cited iconic projects like the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary as shining examples of how ecotourism can protect biodiversity while generating income and preserving cultural identity.

“In Ghana,” she noted, “ecotourism is not just about protecting nature—it’s about empowering people, celebrating culture, and building a future where tourism works for everyone.”

During a vibrant panel discussion on “Local Culture and Ecotourism,” the Minister showcased Ghana’s innovative approach to integrating traditional dance, craft-making, storytelling, cuisine, and heritage textiles like Kente into the visitor experience. She also proposed forward-looking strategies including:

  • Climate resilience and adaptation in ecotourism zones
  • Youth-driven digital engagement and storytelling
  • Smart partnerships to enhance rural tourism infrastructure

Participants at the forum were equally inspired during a guided tour of Suncheon’s famed ecotourism destinations, where they exchanged ideas on blending ecological conservation with local development—a vision Ghana continues to advance with determination.

As global leaders in tourism applaud Ghana’s model, the country reaffirmed its commitment to cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and community ownership in tourism development.

From the forests of Amedzofe to the coastlines of Nzulezu, Ghana is proving that sustainable tourism is not just a destination—it’s a shared journey.
