Hon. David T.D. Vondee, Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti-Morkwa District, has emphasized the pressing need for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to demonstrate unwavering commitment in the fight against illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey.” He contends that only a resolute political will from the ruling party will enable Ghana to finally curb the widespread and destructive practice.

Galamsey remains a deeply entrenched issue in Ghana, fueled by factors such as unemployment, poverty, and the high demand for gold. However, the environmental toll has been catastrophic, leading to extensive deforestation, polluted rivers, and the destruction of arable farmland. This has placed rural communities, which rely on these resources for their livelihoods, in increasingly precarious positions.

Despite various governmental interventions to counteract galamsey, including the establishment of task forces and the deployment of military personnel, efforts have often been hampered by political and economic interests. In some cases, influential figures allegedly benefit from illegal mining activities, making it challenging to maintain consistency in anti-galamsey efforts. Additionally, the lucrative nature of the trade often entices young people, who see it as a viable means of income despite the risks.

Hon. Vondee’s call reflects a broader national sentiment that only strong, consistent, and transparent actions can successfully dismantle the networks that fuel galamsey. He highlights that if the NPP commits to this cause, it would require not only enforcing stricter laws but also providing alternative livelihoods and addressing the root causes that make illegal mining appealing.
