VRA/NEDCO-Tamale Duping their Clients?

Adnan Lodge Tamale made a payment of 30,000 cedis to NEDCO/VRA on Thursday, under the supervision of Mr. Dominic and Mr. Bishop, following false and malicious accusations of illegal connection after a fire outbreak. As I write this status (Sunday, 10:30 AM), our electricity has still not been restored because we insisted on paying the amount into a company account rather than handing over cash. Our hotel has been running on a generator since October 1st. We have been told they have no cables to reconnect us.

The PRO of NEDCO was invited to Sagani TV, along with the manager of Adnan Lodge Tamale, and was asked why our electricity had not been reconnected after the payment on Thursday. He avoided answering the question and was unable to explain how the 30,000 cedis was calculated for a meter that is less than 30 days old. In his own words, “I don’t have the facts.” How can an entire PRO of a major company come on national television to address an issue but claim he doesn’t have the facts on the very matter he was there to discuss? I say that the facts don’t favor him.

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

  • Fact 1: The PRO admitted on live television that because our meter is less than 30 days old, it was hard to calculate the power allegedly stolen during the overnight connection. Instead, they counted our appliances and charged us 30,000 cedis based on that.
  • Fact 2: The PRO admitted that the 30,000 cedis was not a fine, as only a court can impose a fine. This means the 30,000 cedis was their estimate of the electricity allegedly stolen overnight.
  • Fact 3: NEDCO established contact with the electrician who claimed that the manager instructed him to connect the electricity directly on the night of the fire. Based on his testimony, they deemed us guilty of illegal connection. However, if his testimony is valid enough to hold the manager accountable, then it should also be valid enough to establish that the illegal connection lasted less than 24 hours. A 24-hour consumption of electricity should not amount to 30,000 cedis, especially since this is not a court-issued fine.

The PRO advised that we should write to the appropriate authorities, and we will do just that. However, in the meantime, our electricity needs to be reconnected, as we have already paid the absurd estimate of 30,000 cedis into NEDCO’s company account. Whether the 30,000 cedis is fair or not can be decided by the court. The sentiment at our hotel is that the delay in reconnection is due to our insistence on paying into the company account, which has clearly displeased someone at NEDCO.
